Why Biblical Authority Is Not Gender Authority

We affirm that all authority in the church ultimately belongs to Jesus Christ, who is the head of the church and the Lord of all believers.

Scripture teaches that Christ alone possesses supreme authority over His people. All Christian leadership therefore exists under His lordship and must reflect His character of humility, service, and sacrificial love.

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
—Matthew 28:18

Because authority belongs to Christ, the New Testament consistently describes leadership in the church as service rather than domination. Jesus explicitly rejected models of leadership based on hierarchical control.

“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them… It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant.”
—Matthew 20:25–26

For this reason, authority in the church is never grounded in gender, social status, ethnicity, or human hierarchy, but in Christ’s calling and the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The apostle Paul explains that the Spirit distributes gifts to believers for the building up of the body of Christ:

“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit… To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”
—1 Corinthians 12:4–7

Leadership in the church therefore arises from spiritual gifting and character, not from belonging to a particular class of people.

This principle is reinforced throughout the New Testament, which affirms that believers share equal standing in Christ:

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
—Galatians 3:28

Because all believers are united to Christ and adopted as sons of God, no class of Christian possesses greater spiritual authority by virtue of gender, ethnicity, or social standing. Instead, every believer is called to serve according to the gifts given by the Holy Spirit.

Thus, we affirm that biblical authority is Christ-centered rather than gender-based. The church is governed by the lordship of Christ, guided by the Scriptures, and built up through the Spirit’s gifts distributed among all believers.

This understanding preserves both the authority of Scripture and the equal dignity and calling of women and men in the life of the church.
